Students began thinking about strategies they can use to regulate themselves. We explored calming strategies and alerting strategies! Students then created "toolboxes" they can use if needed!
Students began to explore efficient ways to count using tens and ones. They measured lines and strings to figure out how many in all? We also thought about ways to organize our thinking right from the beginning by using different colors to show tens.
Students explored non- standard unit of measurement. We thought about how many pencils and cubes would it take to measure the table. Then we thought about how could we tell another second grade about our length? What if they had smaller paper clips or cubes? Would they get the same measurement? Thus discovering the need for standard units of measuring! A student shared about Hanukkah traditions! If your student would like to share a cultural tradition from your family- please let me know! Students loved learning about Hanukkah!
Students saw a picture of a castle that was in danger due to soil erosion. Their "Engineering Company" was hired to help save the castle! Students were given a budget of 100 dollars to purchase materials (retaining walls, sandbags, grass and trees). Each student created a design and took turns being the "lead engineer" of their team! They tested out their design and then thought about how to improve their design! We finished our nonfiction unit by thinking about all the knowledge we learned about our topics! We created hands that showed the big ideas and drew pictures of the little details! We'll use these teaching posters to teach all about our topic! Students thought about the relationship between money and place value! They realized that dollars, dimes and pennies is similar to hundreds, tens and ones!
